Building Sustainable Workplaces, Not Just Sustainable Events
At 6.Sans, we prioritize sustainability internally, aiming to take care of our employees. For us, sustainability revolves around the three Ps: People, planet, profit. We aspire to be the 'workplace of our dreams' and 'trailblazers of sustainability,' emphasizing the importance of not only focusing on external sustainability but also internal well-being.
Stress has been classified as the health epidemic of the 21st century by the World Health Organization. Did you know that event planning is ranked as the fifth most stressful position? Recognizing that stress is detrimental to our health, we ponder how to cultivate a less stressful and more sustainable workday. Here are some tips!
What can you do in YOUR workplace?
1. Appreciate beneficial stress:
Stress isn't always negative. Embracing positive stress, eustress, can sharpen focus and provide energy. Recognize the 'fight, flight, or freeze' response and choose to 'fight' when needed!
2. Identify stress symptoms:
Signs of stress can manifest in emotions, behavior, the body, and thought patterns. Recognize your symptoms to address them before they become harmful.
3. Identify your stress triggers:
Pause and observe when you feel stressed. Assess what is happening and what might have contributed to it. Identify patterns and recurring stressors.
4. Manage the stress!
While some tips may seem obvious, they are often easier said than done.
• Get organized: Have a clear overview of tasks to feel less overwhelmed.
• Find work-life balance: Ensure your mind disconnects from work during off-hours.
• Take breaks: Regular breaks improve work quality and reduce stress.
• Exercise regularly: Scientifically proven to benefit mental health.
• Talk about it: Share with someone you're comfortable with to clarify issues.
• Delegate: Many jobs, including event planning, are teamwork—use your resources!
• Don't be afraid to say no: Know your capacity and prioritize mental health.
• Healthy eating habits: A balanced diet reduces stress's negative effects.
• Mindfulness: Alleviates stress—Bill Gates and Oprah Winfrey swear by it.
• Seek help and support: Professional, friend, or family assistance is always available.
We have implemented specific measures to reduce stress, such as flexible workdays, the option for remote work, regular social gatherings, walk-and-talks, and healthy lunches.
